Phil Spector invented the groundbreaking Wall of Sound music production method where an orchestra of musicians plays electric and acoustic instruments in an echo chamber. He developed the rich layering technique in the Ronettes' hit "Be My Baby." The Beach Boys' Brian Wilson was such a fan, he penned the song "Don't Worry Baby" in response. But Spector's life also has a dark side involving a penchant for firearms. In 2009, he was sent to prison for shooting B-movie actress Lana Clarkson. His musical genius is still in demand in Corcoran penitentiary though: fellow prisoner Charles Manson recently sent him a handwritten note requesting to record a song with him. Tonight, watch Vikram Jayanti's documentary, which covers everything from Spector's production credentials on the Beatles' Let It Be, to a childhood defined by his father committing suicide with a gun.

Roxie Theater says…

Legendary pop music genius, record producer Phil Spector created the "wall of sound" behind some of the greatest hits. Today he is imprisoned serving 19 years-to-life for the murder of B-movie actress Lana Clarkson. During his first trial (a hung jury), Spector gives a rare freewheeling interview to Vikram Jayanti, filmed at his castle. He lucidly holds forth on his life and work: his father's suicide; the process through which he achieved his distinctive sound; and his friendship with John Lennon. Then there is Spector's curious enmity toward Tony Bennett and Buddy Holly, and a grandiosity that has him likening himself to Bach, da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Galileo. And, yes, there is an endless parade of hairstyles and flamboyant outfits. -Film Forum.
