In the late '80s, Stanley Donwood hitchhiked around England, busking a fire-breathing act. He stopped off at Oxford to visit his friend, a fellow University of Exeter fine-art student named Thom Yorke. Donwood and his flaming torch were scheduled to be the support act for Yorke's band On A Friday at the Jericho Tavern, until the landlord objected. On A Friday went on to become Radiohead and Donwood found a different way to work with the band: as their artist. He's known as the sixth member of the band and has crafted virtually every piece of Radiohead artwork from The Bends, where he morphed a photo of a medical dummy with Yorke's face; to the lava lamp-esque In Rainbows album cover, which was created using wax and hypodermic needles. Tonight's show features pieces inspired by his work for Radiohead's sixth album, Hail to the Thief, and the color of California freeway signs.

FIFTY24SF Gallery says…

Fifty24SF presents Stanley Donwood's first ever showing in the United States. When thinking of iconic imagery in music from the last 20 years, Stanley Donwood's work with Radiohead invariably comes to mind. Donwood's imagery forced us to face the gravity of the music; and by creating cryptic, academic and, (at times) dystopian layouts, the albums themselves became as striking and relevant as the music they contained. From his exhibitions of intricate etchings at Lazarides Gallery in London, to the vibrant works that made up his show at Iguapop Gallery in Barcelona, Donwood's gallery work has consistently mixed personal and political emotions with modesty and humor.
