Cartoonist Paul Madonna was MAD Magazine's first-ever art intern. The position was created for him after he submitted a series of drawings chronicling the awkwardness of excusing yourself from social situations when you really have to pee. When he relocated to the Bay Area, Madonna distributed his hand-drawn zines on Telegraph Avenue until he received an offer from the San Francisco Chronicle to bring his series, "All Over Coffee," to its Datebook section. Now in its sixth year, AOC continues to entrance its audience with the abstract and poetic thoughts of its characters Maurice and Sarah, printed atop the artist's signature architectural backdrops. Tonight, gain some insight into Madonna's creative processes as he discusses his comics at the Commonwealth Club.

Commonwealth Club says…

Madonna combines art, comics, and literature for his unclassifiable series, "All Over Coffee," published weekly in the San Francisco Chronicle, in book form by City Lights Press, and exhibited in galleries and museums. Traveling internationally to draw on location, Madonna addresses the relationship of stories through city and landscape. He will discuss his process and theories of creative practice and present a slideshow of his work.
