I'm Here
Thursday Sep 30, 2010 (7:30pm)
$6 - 10
“Director Spike Jonze chose to follow up his adaptation of Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are with a film featuring a young robot named Sheldon — his tribute to that other much-loved children's storyteller, Sheldon "Shel" Silverstein. Inspired by his classic The Giving Tree, the new short is called I'm Here and stars Andrew Garfield and Sienna Guillory as electronically obsolete young robots in Los Angeles, exploring the possibility of analog love in a digital world. This indie mash-up subverts the usual sci-fi robot clichés and instead hits the sweet spot. Tonight, McSweeney's teams up with the Roxie for a screening of Spike's miniature masterpiece, along with a live performance by Aska Matsumiya, whose music is featured in the film. Also scheduled is Maurice at the World's Fair, Jonze's three-minute homage to Sendak for his 80th birthday.”
It seems like the same old story — boy meets girl, boy falls for girl. But this boy is a robot, and the filmmaker is Spike Jonze. That should tell you this is no ordinary love story. I'm Here stars Andrew Garfield and Sienna Guillory, with a soundtrack featuring Animal Collective, Gui Boratto, Aska Matsumiya and Girls. Aska Matsumiya will perform a set following I'm Here, and past short form works will be shown throughout the evening.
