When it comes to making movies, director Gus Van Sant loves to play it by ear. When he, Matt Damon, and Casey Affleck were holed up in a cabin writing Gerry (2002), they ended up burning the script for warmth, and improvising the scenes based on memory. In the case of the Columbine-inspired Elephant (2003), the cast only had an outline to follow, and Van Sant added the controversial shower scene between the two plotting teens at the last minute. Today, expect the unexpected as Gus returns to the town where he filmed his Oscar-winning Milk (2008), to talk about his techniques behind the lens.

California College of the Arts says…

Van Sant is a filmmaker who is capable of crafting both deeply unconventional independent films and mainstream crowd-pleasers. He is perhaps best known for directing Good Will Hunting (1997) with Robin Williams, Matt Damon, and Ben Affleck. Van Sant was nominated for an Oscar for best director in 1998 (Williams won for best actor, as did and Damon and Affleck for best original screenplay).
