The nonprofit SF Tape Music Center was founded in 1962 to offer a space for electronic improv. Its present-day incarnation, the SF Tape Music Collective, continues the center's mission by using updated technology to present concerts featuring audio diffused through a sound space. This year's Tape Music Festival gives listeners three opportunities to be enveloped by a sound experience. Renowned experimental composers, including the Art of Noise and the UK's "sound diffusion guru" Jonty Harrison, conduct original compositions, as audiences sit in complete darkness, surrounded by more than a dozen speakers. If you thought IMAX was epic, just wait 'til you take the visuals out of the experience.

Fort Mason Festival Pavilion says…

America's only festival devoted to the performance of audio works projected in three-dimensional space, the San Francisco Tape Music Festival returns this January! Curated by sfSound's San Francisco Tape Music Collective, the festival features three distinct evenings of classic audio art and new fixed media compositions by 20 local and international composers. The collective is one of the major proponents of live sound projection, and the members, along with guest composers, will be shaping the sound live over a pristine surround system consisting of 16+ speakers while the audience is seated in complete darkness.
