“One night in 2007, Ra Ra Riot were on the verge of releasing their first EP, when bandmate John Pike disappeared following an afterparty and was never seen alive again. The band's reemergence from that tragedy is reflected in its live presence, even five years later. Onstage, Ra Ra Riot perform like a group of talented college friends who are playing their hearts out for the joy of each other and for their friends past and present. They use everything they've got — including a cello, violin, tambourine, and sweet indie vocals — to tell an earnest, bittersweet story, and tonight at the Great American, they invite you to hear it.”
To observe Ra Ra Riot on stage is to observe a joyful experience in progress, somehow both intensely fun and just plain intense; it's a joy that's always aware that darkness and despair may be just around the corner, that life is both beautiful and terrible, and it's a joy that is in fact amplified by this awareness. It's this bittersweet dynamic that makes the rhumb line a compelling debut album by a band with seemingly limitless potential.
