My two solo records I Often Dream Of Trains (1984) and Eye (1989) book-ended my time as a US college radio dandy. When I wrote and recorded the former I was off the map, writing lyrics for Captain Sensible and working part time as a gardener. I had no band, agent, record label, tour schedule, flight cases, roadies or career prospects. The Trains record was made with no idea of whether I had an audience: I gave myself a budget of £1000 and assumed that with sales of about 1000 records I would make the money back. My only brief was to record the songs unadorned.
