“Psychedelic garage-pop revivalists the Fresh & Onlys have a reputation for being weird. When asked about the inspiration for their music, the band will tell you that songs just pass through the air and that none of their music resonates quite like the San Francisco fog. Bandmates Tim Cohen and Shayde Sartin started jamming onto a tape machine five years ago, which led to the rough low-fi salad of vintage influences that was the band's first two albums. Last year, they sharpened up with their breakout third album Play It Strange, graduating from their analog home recordings to join producer Tim Green of the F*cking Champs in an actual studio. Frontman Cohen takes a break from his prolific solo career to take the stage at Bottom of the Hill tonight.”
The Bay Area's own Fresh & Onlys have really come into their own since I last saw the group, with lineup changes that nixed tambourine girls and took the band away from the rest of the garage rock pack into something darker and different. A mix of Joy Division and nostalgic guitar rock, reminiscent of the most rockin' Cure songs spliced with a tiny bit of spaghetti western scores, the Fresh & Onlys will surely please just about any discerning music lover. At a live show there's twang, jangle, and psychedelia aplenty.
