Public Enemy's classic 1988 album, It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, was a ringing indictment of ghetto streets, police brutality, and white supremacy. It revolutionized hip-hop and marked a radical new direction for the art form. Frontman Chuck D's politically-charged lyrics and the music's firebomb samples — everything from Funkadelic and Slayer to Earth, Wind & Fire and David Bowie — have secured the album's place in hip-hop's pantheon. More recently, Flavor of Love might make it hard to remember that Public Enemy legitimately frightened suburban moms 20 years ago. Chuck D and Flavor Flav have returned to form, however, with How You Sell Soul to a Soulless People Who Sold Their Soul?, which crackles with the same kind of energy and rage that made It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back one of the most important albums in hip-hop.
