The Martha Graham Dance Co. is the oldest in the country, and what else can be said about America's legendary pioneer of modern dance? Graham won the Presidential Medal of Freedom, commemorating her as a national hero for all posterity, and is to dance as Picasso and Stravinsky are to their creative fields. Continuing in the tradition of dance as political statement, tonight's performance will, through live and recorded performances of some of the greatest choreographers ever, explore the political activism of the '30s and its importance to modern issues.

Jewish Community Center of San Francisco says…

Marrying live performances with narration and historical dance footage, Dance is a Weapon explores the political and social activism of the 1930s as it reverberates in the current dialogue about who we are as a nation. This event features the work of modern american choreographers Jane Dudley, Eve Gentry, Isadora Duncan, Sophie Maslow and Martha Graham, spotlighting the ways in which each woman took on the plight of the oppressed.
