The ultimate analog art form during this age of Macbook-powered graphic design, letterpress is a process involving paper and ink, typography (font geeks, unite!), an enormous piece of machinery, and good old-fashioned sweat. The reward for the sweat: the kind of vintage-looking cards, posters, and broadsheets that have texture and life that you can feel when you run your fingertips over the paper. This month, Oakland's Compound Gallery presents The Art of Letterpress, an exhibit featuring champions of the letterpress world. And with posters declaring such wisdom as "COFFEE MAKES YOU BLACK" and "COFFEE MADE ME GAY" (part of printmaker Amos Paul Kennedy Jr.'s series of limited-edition letterpress prints for Gay Pride Month, as commissioned by CB2), this exhibit shows that letterpress isn't just about the art — it's also about the message.

Compound Gallery says…

Typography was once used to express both language and visual imagery, and the process involved in producing prints involved both craft and artistry. This exhibition features the work of artists who work in letterpress using both traditional type setting and modern polymer and magnesium plates, and was co-curated with exceptional Bay Area letterpress artist Rebecca Peters.
