In 2001, Warren Hellman achieved his lifelong dream of putting on a music festival. And since Hellman happened to be a billionaire investment banker as well as an amateur claw hammer banjo picker, he was able to organize a mind-boggling artist lineup in Golden Gate Park. Then he opened the festival to the public, completely free of charge. In the past dozen years, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass has become a much-loved San Francisco tradition. It is also a symbol of Hellman's vision — for his own enduring love of good music, he made good music available to everyone. (Hellman also annually turned down sponsors in favor of keeping the festival entirely non-commercial.) Hellman passed away this past December at the age of 77. Continuing in his tradition, organizers are putting on a free Warren Hellman tribute concert at Ocean Beach. Performers include festival favorites like Gillian Welch, Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, and Boz Scaggs. But don't worry, this won't be your last chance to pay tribute to Hellman and boot-stompin' bluegrass; it's been confirmed that Hardly Strictly Bluegrass will continue to live on.
