Here's a snapshot of our favorite things to do in San Francisco this week.

GO TO SITE

The Bay Area has always offered alternatives for people whose Christmas tolerance was spent by Thanksgiving, and this year is no exception. From spirits of disco's past to boom-box caroling and a Satanic high priestess in a pear tree, there are other options besides playing the Grinch card. So, check your list twice and spread it.

Text Art

From Dada to conceptualism, avant-garde artists have mined the phonetic and visual possibilities of language, exploring its singular importance in human interaction.   Amon Amarth aren't too fond of their shirts, even in December. Being Vikings from Sweden, they're used to the cold and even thrive on it. Their synchronized hair twirling probably helps keep them warm, as well, and their epic hymns to Oden remind us that there was a reason that their people dominated Europe for the better part of three centuries. As popular as Amon Amarth have become, they've yet to succumb to metalcore/emo wanking, staying true to their chunky, melodic death metal on their latest album, With Oden on Our Side. As Ralph Wiggum once put it, "Oh boy! Sleep! That's where I'm a Viking!" Amon Amarth are sure to make you wish you were a Viking all the time. - Gerry Mak

Jewelled Antler is a local music collective responsible for innumerable CD-Rs of spindly forest folk, often recorded in actual forests. The Skygreen Leopards are probably the closest thing to a marquee act to emerge under the Jewelled Antler banner (they've released their last couple of records on Jagjaguwar for wider distribution), though cofounders Glen Donaldson and Donovan Quinn remain too restlessly prolific to limit themselves to any one project. This special bill brings together their latest side projects: Donaldson's Giant Skyflower Band attempts psychedelic doo-wop, while Quinn's work with the 13th Month conjures Syd Barrett running through the songs of John Wesley Harding. - Max Goldberg

Elizabeth Falkner's desserts are architectural constructions, exploding with spun-sugar ribbons and teetering on mousse-and-pastry buttresses. With a fine-arts background and an impressive list of restaurants where she's polished her craft (Rubicon, for starters), Falkner is known for unexpectedly combining exotic spices with her sweets. Her recently published recipe book, the appropriately titled Demolition Desserts, is an intimidating yet inspirational volume that pulls together some of the recipes she's used at her Citizen Cake restaurant. Demonstrating some of her confections at the Commonwealth Club this evening, Falkner may inspire some to ponder a sweeter career path. - Tanya Feldman

For anyone who has "improved" the lyrics to "Jingle Bells" with the line about an odorous Batman, or for anyone who can't stand the constant stream of musical good cheer piped into restaurants, waiting rooms, and malls across the country throughout December, then this raunchy recital of naughty-style holiday classics is sure to elicit a knowing grin. Across songs and skits, solo and ensemble singers touch on hot topics like why Rudolph's nose is so red (hint: it's not from the cold), and detail exactly what Mommy was doing with Santa Claus, besides kissing him. - Matt Sussman

Mike Relm's fluency in both mainstream pop culture and esoteric, art-house aesthetics informs his ingenious mashup DVDs — which have been used as backdrops for performers like RJD2 and Gift of Gab, and for Relm's own riveting solo shows. At Popscene's annual holiday dance party, Relm turns his attention back to the turntables, where he weaves together classic-rock anthems, top-40 hip-hop, and indie-rock hits with ease. Local disco-funksters Sugar & Gold warm up the audience with smooth, soulful dance music with a delightfully sh*t-eating grin. - Connie Hwong

Few enfants terribles last as long as Vincent Gallo has. First emerging in no-wave New York as Jean-Michel Basquiat's bandmate, Gallo has since gone on to win plaudits and controversy for directing films like Buffalo '66 (1998) and The Brown Bunny (2003) (which Roger Ebert hilariously deemed the worst film ever to play at Cannes, causing Gallo to lay a curse on the Chicago critic). RRIICCEE is the artist-provocateur's latest project, a musical improvisation unit featuring Eric Erlandson, the cherubic guitarist formerly of Hole. Needless to say, expect the unexpected: reports from the band's set at last year's Noise Pop Festival hint at a wild performance — and some strange items for sale at the merch table. - Max Goldberg

Fans of flash mobs and minimalist music congregate for this year's Unsilent Night. Experimental composer Phil Kline inaugurated the tradition in 1992, inviting New Yorkers to bring out their boom boxes and take part in massive, orchestrated versions of Christmas carols — seasonal harmonies become expansive sound-spheres shot through with Terry Riley-esque shimmer and Steve Reich-ian pulses. After 15 years of performances all over the world and a recording on Bang on a Can's Cantaloupe label, Kline's events now draw crowds of hundreds. Caroling has never been so epic. - Max Goldberg

Gift of Gab and Chief Xcel formed Blackalicious in the early '90s as part of the same fertile Davis, California, underground that also spawned Latyrx, Lifesavas, and DJ Shadow. The two came into their own with the earnest, organic positivity and verbal calisthenics of their sophomore LP, Blazing Arrow. But it was 2005's The Craft that showed off Blackalicious's pop-radio readiness, positing them as rivals to OutKast's throne. Gab and Xcel bring their good vibes and party beats, plus talented friends the Mighty Underdogs and Trackademicks, to keep up the holiday cheer tonight. - Toby Warner

Challenging the traditional gender roles of the Judeo-Christian world, this rock opera promises to tear down the patriarchy and "reinstate Venus to her rightful throne fully adorned in her sexuality and divinity." Co-creators Lara Maykovich and Maya Dorn normally front the Afrobeat band Aphrodesia, but here they corral a large orchestra and several multi-talented performers to channel Venus Christ's heavy feminist vibration. The piece reimagines the Adam and Eve story as a passion play of female identity and memory. - Max Goldberg

Gavin Russom and Delia Gonzalez's 2005 DFA release, The Days of Mars, channeled the cosmic sprawl of analog synth wizards Klaus Schulze and Tangerine Dream, as well as the dance-floor energy of Giorgio Moroder's disco epics and John Carpenter's soundtracks. If the duo's playlist for Arthur Magazine is any indication, lately they've been moving well beyond "I Feel Love" and bringing in a wider range of sounds. Russom's solo set promises acid house, Krautrock, and Meredith Monk tracks spun in equal measure. Donuts residents Safety Scissors and Pickpocket start off the night with an expedition into inner space. - Matt Sussman

Bringing together singers of many races and religions, the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir celebrates African-American church music as a joyful call and response. Although they have performed alongside South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu and sung with Pharaoh Sanders and Marlena Shaw, the Choir keeps things low key for this holiday concert at Slim's. The venue, which normally reverberates with electric guitars and pounding drums, is sure to be come alive with a totally different sound when the locally based but internationally renowned group celebrates the season with their contagious energy. - Matt Sussman

Look no further for an eccentric activity for Christmas Eve. Local entertainer Chicken John — who founded punk performance troupe Circus Redickuless and ran for mayor with the goal of winning second place — continues his Bay Area tradition of offering lost souls an alternative to the family fare. Expect a combination of hilarity and painful awkwardness as Chicken John runs a game show and gift exchange between audience members. Past Chaos Christmases have lasted well after last call, so make sure you have the stamina to endure this year's extravaganza. - Annie Lo

Folk singer Jonathan Bayer and storyteller Michael Katz both take center stage, providing the soundtrack to all the creative goings on. - Kristin Viola

Hosted by the First Satanic Church and high priestess Karla LaVey, Black X Mass celebrates the marriage of Satanism and rock music. In a deliberate affront to the holiest Christian holiday, radio hostess LaVey presents a showcase of the finest "devil's music." The punk and garage sounds of the Fuxedos, the Grave Brothers, and Abu Ghraib tear up the house, while a crew of fire dancers and Pirate Cat Radio DJs inspire some devilish dancing. Now in its tenth year, this antidote to seasonal reverence promises to lure even more San Franciscans to the dark side. - Matt Sussman

Having designed much of the album art for '80s anarcho-peace punks Crass, Gee Vaucher continues to turn her straight razor on the visual culture of consumer society. Her collage-based works — the missing link between surrealism and Richard Hamilton — are disturbing, sarcastic funhouse mirrors reflecting and distorting western civilization's capacity for greed and injustice. What perfect timing then (e.g., the holiday-season hothouse of conspicuous consumption and enforced bonhomie) for Jack Hanley Gallery to launch this retrospective of Vaucher's work, which includes her Crass pieces as well as a few from her groundbreaking art zine International Anthem. - Matt Sussman
