Mid-February reminds us of the Richard Hell lyric: "Love comes in spurts (it always hurts)." Transgender harpist Baby Dee's love songs hit similarly sweet and sour notes, while Gilbert & George's photographs essay the good, the bad, and the ugly of their 40-year LTR. And love really hurts at the Queen of Hearts Ball — hopefully all that spanking won't leave a mark the morning after.

SPECIAL FEATURE
Out of Town
|
|
|
Flavorpill and Urban Experiment have launched the newest installment in our Out of Town series, for which game (if unsuspecting) readers travel far beyond their metropolitan comfort zones to experience small-town wonders. This time, we hijacked Miamian Michelle for some fun in the Everglades, where "it's a jungle out there" became far more than idle cosmo chatter.

It's easy to convince ourselves that the worst of American censorship is behind us. YBCA tries to disabuse us of that notion, however, with a special presentation of a set of Lawrence Ferlinghetti's thick-stroked paintings, recently removed from an office building because they were deemed inappropriate. Beat poet and City Lights founder Ferlinghetti has a lifetime's experience combating such closed-mindedness; YBCA celebrates this tradition with a reading of Allen Ginsberg's famously ostracized epic Howl.

Siouxsie had a pretty good run as the first lady of the Brit punk and post-punk scene, but she's since left her Banshees (and many of her personal demons) behind, embarking on an impressive post-band career. In the decade since the split, she's lent her rich pipes to collaborations with both the old guard (Morrissey) and newer electronic acts (Basement Jaxx), while her first solo album was released this past fall, garnering praise on both sides of the pond. The record, Mantaray, is a dark electro-pop opus that nods to Siouxsie's goth-punk past while still filling the dance floor. Sinister string trio Rasputina chill the stage in preparation for Ms. Sioux's arrival.

With Weimar New York, producer Earl Dax (and a circus' worth of colorful characters) channels the avant-garde spirit of 1920s Germany, evoking its fertile, subversive art scene in an evening of cabaret-style entertainment. This West Coast rendition of the NY-based spectacle is emceed by Justin Bond (Kiki & Herb) and Ana Matronic (Scissor Sisters), joined by NY icons Ann Magnuson and Penny Arcade, as well as local talent like neo-folker Holcombe Waller — whose vocal range spans three octaves. Your ticket to the performance also grants admission to an afterparty at Harlot hosted by Heklina, Mistress of Trannyshack.

Although DJ Shadow's salad days as a producer appear to be behind him, his live collaborations with turntablist Cut Chemist remain vibrant and inspired. The partnership first built momentum with 2001's Brainfreeze mix CD, which found the two vinyl obsessives cutting their way through a series of obscure, catchy — and occasionally kitschy — funk and soul 45s. Live, expect a wickedly improvised performance on four or more decks, a lot of rare records, and ideas spliced on the fly, with deep funk grooves, B-boy swagger, and the seasoned musicians' pure showmanship underpinning it all.

It's a match made in heaven: George Kuchar and Anne McGuire, two of San Francisco's most beloved doyens of awkwardly candid and emotionally ripe filmmaking, become the Ashford and Simpson of video art for a one-night lovefest showcasing enough handheld melodrama and obsession to launch a thousand soaps. Kuchar screens some of his recent everyday video encounters with weather systems and tempting desserts, while McGuire presents her celebrity meltdown specials All Smiles and Sadness (which features Kuchar) and I'm Crazy and You're Not Wrong, along with the Marina-based stalking diary Joe Dimaggio 1, 2, 3 and other short pieces.

The sex-positive guys and gals at Good Vibrations are holding court, and you're invited. The Queen of Hearts Ball may have more in common with Bud Townsend's infamous 1976 skinematic version of Alice in Wonderland than it does with Walt Disney's, but only the prudish will lose their heads over such guests as pioneering sexpert Dr. Carol Queen and midnight-movie maven Peaches Christ. The leather-and-lace fashions of Madame S, DJ Party Ben's selection of naughty mashups ("Lil' Kim, please meet the Cure"), and, of course, dildo jugglers also add to the festivities. Even the Mad Hatter can't top that.

Singer/songwriter Baby Dee is a classically trained harpist, former church organist, circus freak, and transgender performance artist. She's in town promoting her new album, Safe Inside the Day, produced by Will Oldham and Matt Sweeney, and just released by Drag City. The unusual album manages to be both deeply weird and extremely listenable, as her raspy falsetto hopscotches between torch songs reminscent of frequent collaborator Antony, and rollicking, vaudevillian cabaret tunes. Despite their ribald name, openers White Pee make dreamily pastoral folk drone, using dulcimers, bells, guitars, and assorted string instruments to create a heavenly racket.

Like Playgroup before him, French producer Joakim called up a disparate group of collaborators and guest vocalists to help out on his latest love note to dance music circa '78-'86, 2007's Monsters and Silly Songs. The results are fresh, yet still reveal the ear of a seasoned DJ (Joakim also runs the Tigersushi label and online store) and remixer, who has gussied up tracks by the likes of Annie and Tiefschwarz. Tonight, Joakim shows off his crate-digging prowess in a DJ set, alongside a live performance by neo-Italo darlings Glass Candy. Local DJs Honey Soundsystem and Sleazemore keep the temperature nice and toasty with their disco and electro-house selections.

Legendary godfather of the block party, pioneer of electro-funk, and originator of the Universal Zulu Nation, Afrika Bambaataa lends his guidance to those still "looking for the perfect beat" on Mighty's ginormous sound system. Personally connected to nearly every break, beat, and funk record that's made crate-diggers salivate and B-boys twitch since the birth of hip-hop, Bam continues to spin the tracks he's helped turn into classics — alongside some surprising selections of more recent dance-floor fame. Chocolate City's Allgood Funk Alliance bring their nu-funk take on classic breaks to the dance floor, and Calgary disco fiend Neighbor gets the crowd popping and locking to his edits of classic electro cuts.

Gilbert & George, the art-world enfants terribles in natty bespoke suits, celebrate 40 years of having made their lives their work in this mammoth exhibition (originally launched at London's Tate Modern). Since 1965, when cupid struck the duo at art school, they have cataloged their obsessions (rough trade, bodily fluids, flowers, religion), their times (AIDS and its aftermath), and, most of all, each other, in large-scale, primary-colored photocollages that scan both as personal diary entries and sharp social commentaries. As self-described "living sculptures," Gilbert & George may indeed be the only ones who can truly embody their mantra, "Art for All."

Perhaps the most formally anachronistic of the original French New Wave directors, Jacques Rivette makes films that push the limits of narrative cinema with unsteady structures, open-ended performances, and protracted running times. The twelve-hour version of Out 1 (1971) is something of a holy grail for cinephiles, many of whom indulged themselves last summer when the Pacific Film Archive presented a rare showing. The PFA now screens Rivette's second version, Out 1: Spectre (1973), as part of a series honoring actor Jean-Pierre Léaud. The director here reorganizes the longer film's mosaic narrative loops into a comparatively svelte, but no less engaging, four hours.

Twenty-five-year-old Annie Clark has quite the maelstrom of ideas. Luckily, she also has a wholly capable musical persona with which to steady them. Taking the name St. Vincent, Clark put together Marry Me, one of the most unabashedly adventurous indie-pop albums of 2007. Her songs tweak and twist the influences she picked up as a backing singer for Sufjan Stevens and the Polyphonic Spree, borrowing theatricality from '70s Bowie, the coy power of Kate Bush, and the fractured digitization of a range of noise and electronic artists. Whether or not she's actually saintly is still up for debate, but St. Vincent is certainly onto something.

When Kurt Cobain wore a handmade Flipper t-shirt in a Nirvana photo, the '80s San Francisco punk band obtained a level of minor celebrity it had purposefully avoided in its prime. Spewing club-footed riffs and calculated obnoxiousness, Flipper were the slower, Stooges-obsessed cousins of scene firebrands Dead Kennedys. Even after the death of original singer Will Shatter, the reformed band still lurches out the "hits" and courts disappointment. At this in-store appearance, the surviving members celebrate the good-old days of being bad — as captured on the newly re-released DVD of their VHS document Live Target Video 1980-81.

The sultry sounds of chanteuse Keren Ann evoke a Mazzy Star-like vision of a weary world. The French singer/songwriter's self-titled fifth album follows her internationally lauded last effort, Nolita, with indie folk and country jazz that are a testament to a life lived in transit. She hits Yoshi's tonight alongside husband-and-wife singer/songwriter team Dean & Britta. The duo's delicate, soothing brand of indie pop mixes the deft lyricism of the pair's previous project, the beloved Luna, with whisper-soft harmonies and gently rolling acoustic-guitar lines.

Jordan Eagles' work will have you seeing red, literally. His white plexiglass panels are covered in resin-coated splotches of animal blood, which at first resemble gory lab samples. But, like Andreas Serrano's bloody photographs, Eagle's suspended crimson forms aren't simply about shock value; the artist's process lets him trap every tiny bubble and subtle slope of viscosity, and under light, the painterly drips reveal a subtle richness of color. Then again, this is the life force of a cow, and not a Sherman Williams sample. Eagles may have made the white cube into an abattoir, but there's blood on our hands as well.

Alluding to both Creedence Clearwater Revival's 1969 protest song and Sonic Youth's dark 1985 album, the group exhibit Bad Moon Rising continues the sentiment that something is rotten in the USA. The violent drawings of murderer George Hennard, who was responsible for the 1991 Luby's shooting massacre, jostle uneasily next to Ben Vautier's tongue-in-cheek A Fluxus Suicide Kit. Meanwhile, Rage Against the Machine's poison-pen commentary on the 2000 presidential race seems almost diminutive against the guttural wails emanating from Vanessa Albury and Marthe Fortun's video piece Primal Scream. At least it's still a democracy, where everyone — even the lawless — can have their say.
