America's pop-cultural landscape lost two of its biggest icons last Thursday, with the untimely passing of Farah Fawcett and Michael Jackson. What was equally stunning was the immediacy — perhaps most prevalent with Jackson's case — with which online commentators let loose the snark. A man, who for all his flaws, inner demons, and poor personal decisions, brought joy to millions as perhaps the greatest pop musician of our time, had died. And all some trolls could come up with were cheap jokes along the lines of, "Well, at least his kids are safe." Even Martin Bashir, whose infamous 2001 interview with Jackson reeked of condescension, offered something of a belated mea culpa when discussing the King of Pop's passing. Forecasting from a pre-messageboard universe, Andy Warhol quipped that someday everyone would be famous for 15 minutes; in today's TMZ-and-schadenfreude-fuelled media landscape, that famous dictum could really be rephrased to indicate that the famous will only retain their dignity for about that long.

From Russia with love

Stolichnaya is the classic Russian vodka for a reason. Distilled for more than a century in Russia's black-earth region, Stoli is produced from a careful blend of smooth winter wheat and spicy rye, then filtered through quartz, sand, activated charcoal, and cloth. Sounds like a lot of work for such a simple spirit, but give it a sip or two and you'll know it was worth it.

Who will you be raising a glass to this July 4?

  MUSIC: Rock/Pop
Bill Callahan w/ Bachelorette
when: Tuesday June 30 (8pm)
where: Bimbo's (1025 Columbus Ave, 415.474.0365) map
price: $16
Weary-voiced Bill Callahan now performs free of his (Smog) moniker, offering the antithesis of everything associated with the "singer/songwriter" tag. Sure, guitars are ever-present, and rootsy arrangements abound, but Callahan's strange baritone drawl, darkly funny lyrics, and impressionistic instrumentation form a rare hybrid that avoids sentiment and cliché at every turn. Callahan bares his cynical, wizened persona at Bimbo's tonight in support of his new album, Sometimes I Wish I Were an Eagle. - Oliver Spall

  PERFORMING ARTS: Comedy
Arj Barker
when: Wednesday July 1 (8pm) More times»
where: Cobb's Comedy Club (915 Columbus Ave, 415.928.4320) map
price: $15.50 - 20.50
Mixing intellectual observation with stoner humor and the fruits of a good old-fashioned Bay Area upbringing, comedian Arj Barker is best known for his role as Dave, the hopelessly self-involved pal of Bret and Jemaine on Flight of the Conchords. Barker also has a hefty resume of his own in the comedy world, though; he's run the gamut from late shows to Comedy Central specials, and he co-wrote The Marijuana-logues (currently enjoying a successful off-Broadway run). With no topic off-limits and no end to his comedic charms, Barker offers a whole lot of homegrown funny. - Laureen Mahler

  MUSIC: DJ
Decibel feat. Derrick May
when: Thursday July 2 (9:30pm–2am)
where: Vessel (85 Campton Pl, 415.433.8585) map
price: Various prices
For the dance-music-minded in SF, underground, smaller-room affairs are often the norm. But size has nothing to do with an epic night of dancing, and tonight's Decibel most definitely fits the bill. Detroit techno innovator Derrick May takes to the decks at the ever-hedonistic Vessel, complete with heavy sound system (in May's more than capable hands) and what's sure to be an amped-up crowd of 'heads. - Colin Nagy

Sir Richard Bishop & His Freak of Araby Ensemble w/ Oaxacan and Rubber O Cement
when: Friday July 3 (10pm)
where: Bottom of the Hill (1233 17th St, 415.621.4455) map
price: $10
Sir Richard Bishop's last several solo records play like travelogues through international, acoustic-guitar exotica — touching down in Spanish flamenco, Indian raga drone, Brazilian samba, and British folk. So it's somewhat surprising to see the former Sun City Girl not only strap on the electric, but also settle into one general style. A mix of originals and traditional covers, the recent The Freak of Araby explores Middle Eastern music (filtered, of course, through Bishop's unique brand of mysticism and playfulness). The tour marks another first: Bishop comes flanked by a full live band, helping flesh out the legendary nomad's latest fascination. - Stephen Gossett

price: $9
Early on in Francois Truffaut's third film, the titular deux amis fall for a statue that is soon embodied by intellectual sexpot Jean Morreau. It's fitting that the fictional characters are so enamored by art, and that art influences their lives, since Truffaut's Nouvelle Vague standard has been mimicked, referenced, and quoted by just about every weepy Francophile pondering croissants and the cobblestoned streets of the Left Bank. - Adam Eisenberg

1939: The Golden Year of Cinema
when: Wednesday July 1 More times»
where: The Castro Theatre (429 Castro St, 415.621.5288) map
price: $10
Something must have aligned in the stars in 1939 that made Hollywood sing. Often hailed as one of the Golden Age's greatest years, '39 found many of Tinseltown's brightest shining in some of their most memorable pictures. James Stewart and Marlene Dietrich paired up in Destry Rides Again; Cary Grant and Jean Arthur in Howard Hawks' Only Angels Have Wings; and let's not forget the all-female ensemble of The Women. Appropriately, San Francisco's only movie palace, the Castro, screens these and 15 other glorious classics from this golden year, including Another Thin Man, You Can't Cheat An Honest Man, Wuthering Heights, and Son of Frankenstein. - Matt Sussman
