The folks at Pixar like to include secret love letters to the East Bay in their movies. Hidden City Café features as a backdrop in Monsters Inc. In 1994, over a very productive lunch, Pixar CEO John Lasseter and other head honchos sketched out the concepts for A Bug's Life, Monster Inc., WALL-E, and Finding Nemo on this Richmond-based eatery's paper napkins. If you were to create a star map of landmark Pixar locations, other stops might include: 806 Channing Way, Berkeley (supposedly the Victorian house in Up that floats off tethered to 20,622 helium balloons); the Pixar employee haunt Fenton's Creamery in Oakland (Russell from Up's ice cream of choice); San Pablo Avenue (scene of an Incredibles car chase); and the intersection of Dory Lane and Marlin Drive in Redwood City (the genesis of the character's names in Finding Nemo). This week you can add the Oakland Museum of California to the map — it's playing host to Pixar's exhibition of concept art and models which is returning to the Bay Area after a five-year tour around the world. The toys are back in town.

  SPECIAL FEATURE
The Top 40 Culturally Relevant Preppies

Ladies, locate your tennis skirts. Gents, dig up those Nantucket red pants. The Times and the Awl have called it: Preppie chic is back. We've seen this coming since Vampire Weekend in 2007 and have been trying to avoid it since. But sometimes, when you can't beat a trend, you just have to revel in it. So, in celebration of all things square, we have created a handy guide to the top 40 (get it?) most culturally relevant preppies. »

  MUSIC: Soul/R&B
Sly and Robbie and the Taxi Gang w/ DJ Funklor
when: Tuesday July 27 (8pm) More times»
where: Yoshi's San Francisco (1330 Fillmore St, 415.655.5600) map
price: $26
Reggae's "Rhythm Twins," Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare, came to prominence while supporting the Rolling Stones in 1976. Their group Word, Sound, and Power, featured Peter Tosh (one of Bob Marley's Wailers) on lead vocals. On tour, they were allocated $240 for food each week. Instead of spending it, Sly and Robbie would sneak leftover boiled eggs and bread into a trash bag after breakfast to feast on later. When they went back to Jamaica, the duo used their lunch money set up their own label, Taxi. They've gone on to become one of the most prolific drum and bass sections of all time: playing on or producing over 200,000 records, including Bob Dylan's "Infidels" and Grace Jones' "Pull Up to the Bumper Baby." Join reggae royalty tonight as they turn Yoshi's into their own dance hall. - Joey Stevenson

  MUSIC: Folk/Country
J. Tillman w/ Phosphorescent and Little Wings
when: Wednesday July 28 (9pm)
where: Bottom of the Hill (1233 17th St, 415.621.4455) map
price: $12
Seattle-based musician Josh "J" Tillman is best known as the drummer of Fleet Foxes. But he also has indie-folk credentials all his own: he's penned and recorded seven solo albums over the last six years. Tillman is also well-known for his magnificent beard that like looks like it belongs on a Civil War general. His fans are so enamored with it that he receives catcalls like "I want to live in your beard" during gigs. It's not a folkster fashion statement though: he's maintained facial fuzz for years due to a nerve condition that affects his right eye and makes it hard to see his face while shaving. Tonight, meet the man behind the beard and discover his beautiful, careful, and at times heartbreaking folk music. - Allison P Davis

Insect mounting class
when: Thursday July 29 (4–7pm) More times»
where: Paxton Gate (824 Valencia St, 415.824.1872) map
price: $60
"Entothusiast" Zenaida Sengo has taught the insect mounting class at Paxton Gate for the past six years. She's also a "reptothusiast" — when she isn't point-mounting arthropods, she is leading activities at Paxton Gate's children's location with the help of her friends Pup, a blue-tongued skink, and Alfy, a ball python. Come benefit from Zen's love of underdog species this month and acquire a new appreciation for the way a Chrysochroa Opulenta beetle or a Madagascar Sunset moth is arranged on a mounting board. Paxton Gate provides the materials and insect specimens, which are pre-softened (to make them pliable for mounting) in sand-filled jars called insect relaxing chambers. All you have to do is spread and pin 'em. Very, very carefully. - Bonnie Chan

Tracy Morgan
when: Friday July 30 (8 & 10:15pm) More times»
where: Cobb's Comedy Club (915 Columbus Ave, 415.928.4320) map
price: $40.50
Tracy Morgan is well-endowed. He claims that a previous partner likened their love-making sessions to getting stuffed with Stove Top stuffing, turkey-style. Afterward, he celebrated by having the words "Stove Top" tattooed to his member. This outspoken comedian has come a long way since growing up in Brooklyn projects: he did a seven-year stint on SNL, starred in films alongside Bruce Willis and Adam Sandler, and received an Emmy nomination for his role in 30 Rock. Tonight, Morgan takes a break from the sitcom's set and his unusual pet collection (which includes five scorpions, two piranhas, and three sharks) to tell jokes on the stage at Cobb's. Expect to laugh, but don't expect political correctness. - Christina Richards

when: Saturday July 31 (11am–5pm) More times»
where: Oakland Museum of California (1000 Oak St, 510.238.2200) map
price: $12
Pixar Chief Scientist Loren Carpenter is obsessed with zoetropes — the spinning "wheels of life" that were one of the first forms of animation. He helped fund Peter Hudson's monkey-themed Homouroboros, a 24-foot pedal-powered zoetrope which premiered on the playa at Burning Man in 2007. Carpenter was also the Technical Lead and driving force behind Pixar's zoetrope where 180 characters from Toy Story 2 spin on a circular disk at 25mph. When viewed under strobing lights, Woody and Buzz come to life like a 3D flip book and magic is made. This zoetrope forms the cornerstone of Pixar's 25th-anniversary art exhibition which opens today at the Oakland Museum of California. - Joey Stevenson

  FILM
Cremaster Cycle
when: Monday Aug 2 More times»
where: Roxie Theater (3117 16th St, 415.863.1087) map
price: $10
Conceptual artist Matthew Barney first learned the word "cremaster" at his sister's wedding. He was talking to his family physician, Dr. Lung, about his interest in biology and sexual differentiation. Lung suggested that he look up the cremaster muscle, which raises and lowers the testicles and is also associated with the moment in-utero at which the gonads rise to become ovaries or lower to become testes. Barney's resulting project, Cremaster Cycle, is a five-part series of films which has earned him the titles "the most crucial artist of his generation" (NYT) and "the Michelangelo of genital art" (Harpers). This week the Roxie hosts a rare screening of Barney's entire Cremaster canon. Those reluctant to dedicate nearly seven hours to this epic might consider just catching C3 (2002), which features the construction of the Chrysler Building, masonic rituals, demolition derbies, sadistic dentistry, and zombie horses. - Maya de Paula Hanika

  ART: Fair
Renegade Craft Fair
when: Saturday July 31 (11am–7pm) More times»
where: Fort Mason Festival Pavilion (Marina Blvd and Buchanan St, 415.345.7500) map
price: FREE
The aisles of the Renegade Craft Fair are like the best of Etsy.com coming to life. Chicagoans Sue Daly and Kathleen Habbley started the indie fair seven years ago when they couldn't find a venue to sell their silk-screened wooden jewelry and coin purses. Traditional craft fairs had steep fees and didn't fit their aesthetic, so they started their own. Renegade was such a success that Daly and Habbley quit their jobs as waitress and animal-shelter employee and have spread the biannual fair to Chicago, Brooklyn, Los Angeles, Austin, and San Francisco. This weekend, they set up shop in the Fort Mason center. Expect Little Otsu's pretty paper goods, Lisa Congdon's colorful canvases, and Erin Dollar's woolly fake beards. - Joey Stevenson
