Today @ Rare Medium Gallery - 1321 E Pine St. Seattle, WA 98122
Are you sitting down? Stations, a solo show by Mark Tracy, features drawings and paintings of chairs. By concentrating on commonplace furnishing, Tracy injects subtle emotion into inanimate objects, coloring his chairs with a sense of wonder, dread, even violence. Mark Tracy is a Washington-based painter and founder of The Seattle Group, a collective of visual artists from the PNW. Rare Medium, a new gallery on Capitol Hill, shows art and sells Polaroid cameras. Long live analog!
Coming Up
Today @ The Crocodile
Cate Le Bon is a Welsh singer-songwriter whose music can go from simple folk pastoralism to flirting with psych-tinged riffing backed by a full band. These are both '70s vintage sounds, but Le Bon gives them a modern twist by way of her knowing lyricism. With local support from Charles Leo Gebhardt IV's bluesy, Brit-invaded indie rock.
Nirvana: Taking Punk to the Masses
Today @ EMP Museum
A pleasantly surprising exhibit that provokes way more than mere worship of the raucous rock 'n roll band. Find intimate photos and letters documenting Kurt Cobain's attempts to stay connected to friends in spite of rising fame, funny and poignant artifacts from the band's tours, and an interactive video exhibit gathering personal insights from people in all pockets of the local music industry who watched Nirvana's rise and tragically premature implosion. Best of all, this exhibit is not just about Nirvana, but about the ephemeral moment that brought together an entire local music ecosystem. For newcomers to Seattle and music scene veterans alike, it's a fun way to experience the history of clubs, musicians, record labels, and turning points that have defined this city's image.
Xenobia Bailey: The Aesthetics of Funk
Today @ Northwest African American Museum
For decades, Seattleite Xenobia Bailey has been crafting domestically charged artwork that embraces the aesthetics and spirit of African American identity. (Her custom hats were featured in Do The Right Thing and The Cosby Show.) Bailey's background in industrial design and fiber arts as well as her studies in ethnomusicology inform her vibrant pieces. A seasoned crocheter, the artist uses energizing, contrasting colors and repetitive patterns to express a sense of jubilation. See her solo exhibit: Xenobia Bailey: The Aesthetics of Funk, at NAAM through May 6th.
